ACADEMY CLUB FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTSAcademy Club for Young ScientistsThe Finnish Academy of Science and Letters undertook a new activity in autumn 2009, an ‘Academy Club for Young Scientists’. The aim is to increase interdisciplinary discussion and provide an opportunity for young scientists to express their views to other scientists and media. The club will have nine monthly meetings, each with a programme consisting of presentations by two young scientists dealing with their own research and its methodology. Membership will last for one academic year, from September to May, so that new members, 16 in all for the academic year 2010-2011, will be selected each year [members]. The members are selected by the Board of the Academy following suggestions from its 15 disciplinary groups in the Academy. Each group may propose two candidates, and board members may make proposals as well. The category of ‘young scientist’ means here that less than five years should have passed since the candidate completed his/her Ph.D. dissertation and that the candidate should be continuing with scientific work. The success of the club and the stimulus generated by it will depend to a great extent on the ability of its members to present their ideas in a way which is understandable to other scientists. The language of the meetings will in most cases be Finnish, but English may also be used. A small number of Academy members (1-3) will participate in the meetings as mentors. The meetings will be recorded on video, and will be available on the Academy’s webpage [meetings] .
