MEMBERSMembersSee the lists of members: Finnish Members (in Finnish) Structure and membershipThe Finnish Academy of Science and Letters is divided into two Sections, representing science and the humanities, each grouped internally by disciplines, 7 in science and 8 in the humanities, with a fixed number of members representing each discipline:
Ordinary membership is granted to meritorious Finnish scholars, by invitation only, and particularly outstanding individuals or patrons of science or the arts may be named as honorary members. The Academy has also had the custom since 1924 of appointing foreign members. All membership questions are decided at the Annual Meeting held in April of each year. The number of Finnish members is restricted to 333 persons under the age of 65 years, 194 in the Section of Science and 139 in the Section of the Humanities. When a member reaches the age of 65 years his or her place becomes vacant and can be refilled, but the person continues to be a full member of the Academy. This age limit was 70 years up to 2001. The total membership in January 2011 was 643 Finnish members and 196 foreign members. The Academy’s honorary members are President Mauno Koivisto, Academician Olli Lehto, Chancellor Kari Raivio and Professors Jaakko Hintikka, Paavo Seppänen, Eeva Tapio, Anna-Leena Siikala, Jarmo Visakorpi, Maija Lehtonen, Elina Haavio-Mannila and Heikki Palva. The board of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters comprises the chairman, vice-chairman, secretary general, treasurer, the secretaries of the two sections, the chairman of the publication board and three other members elected for one year at a time. The chairman and vice-chairman are elected from the two sections alternately and their terms of office are two years. The other officials serve for a term of five years, as also do the chairmen, vice-chairmen and secretaries of the individual disciplines.
